Generally the key word with businesses in this sector is brand. The metrics that reflect a brand’s value are often highly related to the acquiring party. Once a product or service offering has been created and grown a presence in a market, the business becomes extremely attractive for ‘roll-out’ across broad geographies and into related market sectors.

In the UK a large portion, excuse the pun, of the Consumer and Leisure sector relates to food and drink. Seen as defensive sectors in times of recession, businesses have fared relatively well compared to service industries where budgets can be cut. With the strength of food and drink related stocks relatively stronger than the rest of the market, larger businesses have maintained their ability to acquire.
